Global Department Partnerships
The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology maintains informal contacts with universities in Africa, Asia, and Europe that may be of interest for research or study visits. The department's international affairs advisor is happy to provide further information in response to specific inquiries (e.g., regarding country or purpose). The department's field schools, summer schools, and winter schools also offer additional opportunities for study-related stays abroad.
Global Faculty Partnerships
In addition, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities maintains numerous partnerships with universities around the world. Applications are handled through the Faculty’s Center for International Relations (ZIB). To find out whether you can apply from a different field of study, please contact the relevant advisors directly.

University-Wide Partnerships
In addition to the existing partnerships at the faculty or department level, the University of Cologne maintains partnerships with universities in both European and non-European countries. These are mainly coordinated by Department 93, International Mobility.

If you are interested in going abroad to a university that is not managed by the International Affairs Division, please contact the advisor at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. We will then assess on an individual basis whether an exchange is possible.
Application Process
Whether you are planning your stay abroad through our department, faculty, or university-wide partnerships, the first step is always to gather detailed information about the offerings:
- from the Center for International Relations (ZiB) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (website only available in German)
- from the International Affairs Division of the University of Cologne (UoC)
- from other funding sources (website only available in German)
In the second step, please contact the international advisor at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. In any case, you must clarify whether the courses you wish to take at the partner university can be recognised in the Anthropology programme. Please discuss the Learning Agreement with the advisor before your stay abroad.
Please schedule an individual appointment via Zoom for this.
