Research Interests

In addition to the study of portrait art of the Iulian-Claudian period, which began in the student years, two further focal points have increasingly emerged since 1988, the archaeology and history of Troia-Ilion from the Late Bronze Age to Late Antiquity and of north-western Asia Minor and Lesbos (including Pergamon) from the Middle/Late Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period. Specific research topics were/are the nature and time of the 'foundation' of the Greek Troia-Ilion, the role of this site as an ancient monument city, the history of Larisa on the Hermos, especially its importance as a tyrant's seat, the so-called Aeolian Migration and the cultural profile of the Aeolis. The investigations were/are based on the compilation and critical interpretation of the relevant written sources and the archaeological evidence (above all architecture, urbanism, ceramics, especially the so-called Aeolian grey ware), which means that the understanding of the features/findings laid down in the preliminary reports and publications of older excavations was also questioned and a compilation and evaluation of excavation documents that were only incompletely dealt with in the publications was undertaken.
