Between Hellenization and Romanization. Transformation Processes in the City and Necropolis Development in the Provinces Syria and Arabia

1 / 2

The starting point of this research project is the Syrian-German cooperation project of the German Archaeological Institute, Department Damascus, Architecture-Urbanism of the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne and the “Direction Générale des Antiquités et des Musées de la Syrie“ which was begun in 1997 and focuses on the investigation of ancient Kanatha, a vital member city of the Decapolis. My habilitation resulted from this. Within the DFG-funded subproject (“Necropolis and Bathing Complex Excavation in al-Qanawat / Kanatha”), the focus was mostly on the necropoles and the funerary monuments. In the future, further overarching studies on specific types of buildings of city infrastructure in southern Syria are planned.
