Digitalization of the Negatives of Sculptures of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome

The DFG supported projects aimed to conserve and make the negatives of sculpture that belong to the German Archaeological Institute in Rome accessible through the Internet database ARACHNE.

The previously mentioned holdings were made accessible worldwide and without charge in ARACHNE in the years 2004 and 2005. This creates a large qualitative and quantitative improvement for the research on ancient sculpture. Aside from worldwide accessibility of the photographs, monuments have been prepared for several complex research questions.

The holdings include several central groups of Roman sculpture of Italy. In addition to the sculptural plastic and Roman portraits, all monuments of Rome that offer larger amounts of images, such as arches like the Arch of Titus or Constantine and the Column of Trajan, are available.
